"Morgan Matkovic" Her Voice CHS
Embracing the Journey: Motherhood, Advocacy, and Resilience
Morgan Matkovic, a Charleston, SC resident, has carved out a meaningful space in the digital world where she shares the intricate tapestry of her life. With her husband Phil and their two daughters, Madeline Mae and Lila Lee, by her side, Morgan’s blog is more than just a personal outlet—it’s a source of comfort, connection, and inspiration for many.
Morgan’s blogging journey began in 2015, during her first pregnancy, as she navigated the emotional rollercoaster of infertility. What started as a creative outlet soon transformed into a lifeline, where she found solace through writing. Her blog has since evolved into a rich and candid portrayal of life’s ups and downs, especially as a mother, an author, and a passionate advocate for special needs.
In 2020, Morgan’s world shifted when she noticed that Lila Lee, her youngest daughter, wasn’t meeting certain developmental milestones. While doctors initially attributed this to the social impact of COVID-19, Morgan’s intuition told her otherwise. Despite reassurances that Lila was fine, Morgan knew deep down that something was different. Her persistence and determination led to a long-awaited diagnosis in September 2022: Autism Spectrum Disorder.
This diagnosis marked the beginning of a challenging yet transformative journey. Morgan and her family dove headfirst into various therapies—Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), Occupational Therapy (OT), Speech-Language Pathology (SLP), and music therapy—determined to give Lila the best possible start. The financial burden was heavy, costing them thousands of dollars, but their ability to fund these critical services became a blessing they would forever cherish. In just eight months, Lila went from being non-verbal to possessing an infinite vocabulary—a testament to the power of early intervention.
Morgan’s experience ignited a passion within her to make a difference beyond her own family. This calling led to the creation of Her Voice CHS, an initiative dedicated to spreading awareness and acceptance of Autism Spectrum Disorder. Through Her Voice CHS, Morgan advocates for early evaluation and intervention, recognizing that these crucial steps can open doors to a brighter future for many children like Lila Lee.
Morgan was yet again inspired by her other daughter, Maddie Mae, to teach other children how to interact best with siblings and other children like Lila Lee. Morgan wrote a children’s book called “My Sister Lila Lee” from the perspective of her oldest daughter, Maddie Mae. The book teaches children about traits of children like Lila Lee and how to spot and interact with them in a positive way. Told through the eyes of older, neurotypical Maddie Mae, this story gives a voice to girls with Autism Spectrum Disorder, while celebrating differences and heralding the beauty that comes along with them. The heartfelt, rhythmic prose alongside beautiful watercolor illustrations by Betsy Douglass bring this story of love, acceptance, and kindness to life, all while championing the power of sisterhood.
